Deputy Stage Manager


Claybody Theatre are looking for a Deputy Stage Manager for their upcoming production, THE CARD

About the project:

THE CARD is a new adaptation of Arnold Bennett’s much-loved novel, adapted by Deborah McAndrew. This fun, fast-paced production will be directed by Conrad Nelson and will feature members of the Claybody Community Company alongside a professional cast, and award-winning brass band, Acceler8.

This production will rehearse in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, with performances taking place at Fenton Town Hall ST4 3FA.

 The Role:

The Deputy Stage Manager will:

Support rehearsals, overseeing rehearsal sessions, call times, production meetings and liaising with the production manager, producers and creative team

Produce rehearsal notes and feedback for the wider creative team as required to meet the needs of the project

Support the wider creative team during rehearsals with the sourcing of props and equipment.

Liaise with rehearsal and performance venue partners as necessary

Assist the production manager with the smooth running of the tech

Operate lighting and sound during performances

Assist the technical stage manager with the setup of shows, particularly props, furniture and costume

Be supportive to the full company, including community and band members

We’re looking for an individual with: 

  • An ability to work well as part of a supportive, collaborative team.
  • An ability to work flexibly and proactively
  • Experience of working on large-scale shows, ideally with experience of working with community companies
  • Experience of creating work in non-theatre venues
  • An ability to communicate well with venue staff, volunteers and members of the public.
  • Experience of operating shows, including a basic knowledge of Qlab

 A keen ear for music would be desirable.

Project Dates:

The overall dates are Monday 6 June – Saturday 9 July (inclusive)

Rehearsals commence: Monday 6 June

Technical rehearsals commence: Monday 27 June

Show opens: Wednesday 29 June

Performances: Wednesday 29 June – Saturday 9 July, 7:30pm

Matinees: Saturday 2 July and Saturday 9 July, 2:30pm, Sunday 3 July, 4:00pm, Thursday 7 July, 1:30pm


The successful candidate must be available for all rehearsal and performance dates, evening and weekend working will be required.



We can offer a total fixed fee of £2,470, this is based on ITCs rate of £494/week.

 In addition to this fee we will also pay subsistence of £105/week to any successful candidate living over 25 miles from the performance venue. We will also pay travel costs for the start and end of the contract, to the cost of a standard second-class train fare.
